The George Ballroom is on the first floor of the George Hotel on Fitzroy Street, St Kilda. The hotel opened in 1857 as the Terminus Hotel, and the ballroom was added in 1886; it served as tea room, dining room and the address for society weddings into the 1930s, then spent the 1970s and 80s as the Crystal Ballroom and Seaview Ballroom music venues. After nine years closed it was restored with Heritage Victoria and reopened in September 2015. The ceiling alone took four months.
We have filmed a wedding at The George Ballroom and photograph weddings across St Kilda and the bayside suburbs. The room takes 150 to 200 guests, with the smaller Salon Room alongside. What you get is the real thing: rosettes and pilasters, etched-glass gasolier lighting, mosaic tiles, satin-glass windows, an Art Deco staircase with a marble floor and stained glass, and walls left with their patina rather than repainted.
On this day the film moved between 2 locations: the ceremony and the reception at The George Ballroom and portraits at Lakeside Lookout, Albert Park.
