The National Portrait Gallery is on King Edward Terrace in Parkes, beside the High Court and the National Gallery of Australia. The building opened on 4 December 2008 to a design by Sydney firm Johnson Pilton Walker: five long bays at right angles to the Land Axis, cantilevered concrete blades at the entrance and clerestory glazing lighting the rooms from above. Around 500 portraits hang at any time, and the gallery hires its spaces, Gordon Darling Hall among them, for ceremonies and receptions.
Deisy and Aaron’s Canberra wedding photographs include the National Portrait Gallery, and its appeal for a portrait session is obvious: raw concrete, long lines and big flat planes that make a couple read clean and graphic against them. It is also a few minutes from the lake, Reconciliation Place and the other national buildings, so it pairs with an outdoor stop easily.
