Mount Lofty Botanic Garden covers 97 hectares on the eastern slopes of Mount Lofty at Crafers in the Adelaide Hills, off Lampert Road. It opened in 1977, the youngest of South Australia’s three botanic gardens, and was listed on the Register of the National Estate in 1980. Allan Correy’s 1960s plan gives each valley a region of the world and leaves the ridges as native bush: gullies for rhododendrons, magnolias and ferns among them, and a Main Lake built in 1978.
It is a cool, wet hillside garden, so it photographs unlike anything on the Adelaide plains: tree ferns, deep shade, big deciduous trees and open lawn beside the water. Veri photographed Monique and Daniel’s wedding portraits here, 119 frames that move from the lakeside down into the gullies, with the couple small against tall trunks and then close in the green light under the canopy.
