Vines planted in 1973 on a Wilyabrup dairy farm, long tables among the rows, and the shed on the hill
Hay Shed Hill is a winery on Harmans Mill Road at Wilyabrup, in the Margaret River region of Western Australia. The vines went in during 1973 on a dairy farm, and the first wines were made in a hay shed on the hill above the pastures, which gave the place its name in 1989. Since 2006 the owners have been a small group that includes the winemaker. Weddings are run by Rustico, the tapas restaurant on the property.
Veri photographed Natasha and Adam’s wedding here in February 2018: ceremony, portraits and reception, all on the estate, across a full gallery and a short preview. Weddings at Hay Shed Hill are food-led and relaxed, built around long shared tables among the vines, with an all-weather arrangement if the day turns. Bridal accommodation sits a five-minute drive away.
February in Margaret River is hot and bright at midday, so the ceremony works best from about four o’clock, when the light comes in low across the rows. Portraits go straight into the vineyard: the rows on the slope give depth, and the old shed on the hill is worth a frame on its own. Long tables outdoors photograph as one wide scene, and the light stays on them until the sun drops behind the hill. The galleries above are Natasha and Adam’s wedding and its preview.
