How to prepare for your wedding photos (without overthinking it)

Seven small things that make a real difference on the day — learned across hundreds of weddings. None of them involve practising poses.

Most couples ask us the same thing before their wedding: what should we do to get good photos? The answer is less than you think. Great wedding photos come from a day that runs at a comfortable pace, in places that suit you, with people who feel free to be themselves. Here’s what helps most.

Be yourselves — that’s where the magic is

You don’t need to perform or worry about what you look like. The best photos come from real moments: a glance, a laugh, a shared breath. Let go a little — we’ll guide when needed, and the best unfolds naturally.

If you feel awkward in front of a camera, you’re in good company — most people do. Hold hands, talk to each other, walk somewhere together. We give small prompts that get you moving and laughing, then step back and photograph what happens.

Build buffer time into your timeline

A little breathing room between getting ready, the ceremony and couple portraits makes all the difference. It gives us space for spontaneous shots — and gives you time to soak it all in.

As a guide, leave 10 to 15 spare minutes between each part of the day, and plan your couple portraits for the hour before sunset if you can, when the light is softer and warmer. Send us your draft timeline early and we’ll help you shape it.

Choose locations that feel like you

A quiet lane, an open field, a textured wall — we love meaningful or interesting spots. Trust us to find great light, but if you’ve got a place you love, let’s work it in.

It doesn’t need to be famous. The park where you had your first date, a family farm or your favourite beach often means more in years to come than a landmark. Tell us what matters to you and we’ll plan the route and timing around it.

Consider an unplugged ceremony

Phones can distract from the emotion (and your photos). Asking guests to be fully present makes for cleaner frames and a more heartfelt atmosphere.

Ask your celebrant to make a short announcement before you walk in, or place a small sign at the entrance. Guests can still take photos later, at the reception.

Get ready in calm, light-filled spaces

Clutter-free rooms with natural light are a photographer’s dream, and calm energy in the morning sets the tone for the day. Keep the space tidy — or assign a friend to do a quick sweep before we arrive.

Choose a room with a big window and open the curtains. Hang your dress or suit where we can see it, and keep the small details together — rings, invitation, shoes, perfume — so we can photograph them without searching through bags.

Keep a drink and snacks nearby

Especially during portraits — hydration and a little sugar go a long way in keeping energy and moods high.

Ask a bridesmaid or groomsman to carry water, a few snacks and some tissues while we take your portraits. It’s a small thing that keeps everyone comfortable.

Trust the process

We’ve worked at hundreds of weddings and we’re here to make you look and feel amazing. Trust us with the light, the angles, the pace — we’ve got you.

On the day, your only job is to enjoy it. We’ll watch the light, keep an eye on the timeline and look after the details, so you can stay present with each other and your guests.
