Canterbury Gardens is a public garden on Canterbury Road in Canterbury, in Melbourne’s inner east, across the road from the railway station. It was laid out in the early 1900s and has hosted Carols by Candlelight since 1940. The features are a raised heritage rotunda, mature trees over lawn, perennial borders, parterre beds and a rose garden, and a path and small bridge through an avenue of weeping cherries. It is a portrait location first, though council permits ceremonies of up to 80.
Sue and Chris had the gardens to themselves for an hour between their ceremony at Syndal Baptist Church in Glen Waverley and the reception at Riversdale Golf Club in Mount Waverley. Canterbury Gardens gave the formal frames their family will print: the bridal party of three and three plus a flower girl under the trees, then the rotunda. We photographed another wedding here in an earlier season.
