Melbourne Museum is on Nicholson Street in Carlton Gardens, on the north-east edge of the Melbourne CBD, next to the Royal Exhibition Building of 1880. The museum opened in 2000 to a design by Denton Corker Marshall, all angled blades, glass and colour, and houses the Forest Gallery, a living slice of temperate forest inside the building. The gardens around it cover 26 hectares, with elm and plane avenues and the Hochgurtel fountain, and the whole precinct was World Heritage listed in 2004.
Veri uses the museum and the gardens as a portrait location rather than a venue. Ruth and Chelsea’s pre-wedding photos in January 2019 were made across Carlton Gardens and the museum, and Vanessa and Ian stopped here for portraits on the way from their Vogue Ballroom ceremony to Docklands and St Kilda Pier. The pairing of the museum’s sharp lines with the gardens’ old trees gives two looks within a five-minute walk.
