Mercure Ballarat Wedding Photos: Georgie & Johnny

Ballarat Premier Apartments · Mercure Ballarat · Ballarat Botanical Gardens · Golden Point, Ballarat

Garden Wedding · Region: VIC - Ballarat · City: Melbourne · Venues: Ballarat Botanical Gardens · Ballarat Premier Apartments · Mercure Ballarat

Easter Saturday in Ballarat, a hotel garden full of roses and a wind with strong opinions about Georgie’s veil. We spent Georgie and Johnny’s Mercure Ballarat wedding right beside them and about 150 of their favourite people, from the first nervous grins to the last hug under the gum trees. In between came a rose-petal storm down the aisle and a golden-hour dash to Ballarat Botanical Gardens, where the autumn light did exactly what we’d hoped it would.

The wedding story

Our Mercure Ballarat wedding photos: a runaway veil and golden light in the gardens

Ballarat Central preparation · Golden Point ceremony · Botanical Gardens portraits · Mercure Ballarat reception

Johnny was ready first. Black tuxedo, white boutonniere and that calm-before-the-aisle look we love to catch while window light is soft and kind. By half past one we’d crossed town to Ballarat Premier Apartments in Ballarat Central, where Georgie’s room had a shuttered bay window throwing even, pearly light, the sort that makes satin glow without a single flash. A loved one fastened her gown and fanned the long train across the carpet, and once the veil was in, Georgie couldn’t stop laughing. Neither could we.

At half past three Georgie walked through the Mercure Ballarat garden on the arm of a loved one, and Johnny’s grin at the front could have lit up the whole of Golden Point. They kissed under a timber arbour with the bridesmaids in white beside them, then came back up the aisle through a proper rose-petal storm. Our tip for petals: hand them out before the vows and ask guests to throw high, not at faces. We danced the two of them along the lakeside path, rattled through the family photos, and then their fluffy white dog arrived in a flower collar and stole every frame going.

Just after five we drove the wedding party to Ballarat Botanical Gardens on the shore of Lake Wendouree. That timing matters in autumn. The sun sits low behind the Robert Clark Conservatory, so we shot into the light and let it glow through the veil and rim everyone in gold. The bridesmaids cheered, Johnny swept Georgie off her feet in front of the groomsmen, and the wind turned her long veil into our favourite prop. One gust wrapped it across Georgie’s face mid-laugh; another lifted veil and gown together as they kissed beside the glass. Long veils and breezy days are a gift, as long as you let them fly.

Back at Mercure Ballarat we stole a few quiet minutes under the vine-covered pergola, its hanging glass lights just starting to glow, before dinner swept everyone inside. After dark we pinched them one last time for the festoon lights in the gum trees, the final portraits of a very full, very happy day.

We filmed it all too, so if these Mercure Ballarat wedding photos made you smile, Watch Georgie and Johnny’s Mercure Ballarat wedding film.

Photographer's venue notes

Mercure Ballarat for the party, the Botanical Gardens for the glow

Mercure Ballarat Hotel & Convention Centre sits on Main Road in Golden Point, on the southern side of Ballarat, with a lake and rose gardens wrapped around its function rooms. It takes ceremonies of 5 to 250 guests and receptions of up to 500, and with 97 rooms on site your guests can go from ceremony to dinner to bed without a single taxi. For a photographer it’s a generous venue: the garden ceremony spot, the lakeside path and that leafy pergola gave us three very different looks without leaving the grounds. Start pergola portraits about half an hour before sunset and you get the hanging lights and the last of the daylight in the same frame.

For portraits we love the 15-minute drive to Ballarat Botanical Gardens: 40 hectares on the western shore of Lake Wendouree and one of the oldest botanical gardens in Victoria. The Robert Clark Conservatory is the glasshouse in Georgie and Johnny’s photos, and in autumn its floral display is usually begonias. In early April we aim to arrive around five, when the light turns warm and comes in low across the lawns. It’s a public garden and busy on weekends, so build in a little buffer and bring your bridal party’s best energy.
