A grid inside a ring of parkland, with the hills on one side and the gulf on the other
Adelaide’s city centre was laid out on Colonel Light’s grid in 1837 and is still ringed by more than six square kilometres of Park Lands. North Terrace carries the Botanic Garden, the Art Gallery, the State Library and the university, with the Torrens, Elder Park and Adelaide Oval just behind. Summers are hot and dry, winters mild and wet. Glenelg beach is nine kilometres west on the tram, and the Mount Lofty Ranges close the eastern skyline at 727 metres.
We have photographed weddings at the South Australian Museum on North Terrace and the Festival Function Centre in the city. In the hills above town we have photographed at Mount Lofty Botanic Garden and Longview Vineyard.
The Park Lands hold 29 parks and squares, and the heritage courtyards behind North Terrace add old stone close to town. Veale Gardens, Rymill Park and the fig avenues of Botanic Park are the reliable portrait spots, and the East End laneways and Rundle Mall come into their own after dark. Himeji Garden and the old market laneways colour up in autumn. Summer heat argues for a late ceremony. Rymill Park is often taken by the Fringe in February and March.
