Blue Mountains Wedding Photography

A sandstone ledge over an ocean of blue ridges, and mist that takes the view and hands it back

The Blue Mountains start 50 km north-west of Sydney, about 90 minutes by road, and the villages along the ridge, Wentworth Falls, Leura, Katoomba at 1,010 metres, Blackheath and Mount Victoria, sit on a sandstone plateau over the Jamison Valley. Eucalyptus oil gives the haze its colour, and the area has been World Heritage listed since 2000. Katoomba averages 22 degrees in summer and 10 in winter, with two or three snowfalls a year. Venues are heritage homesteads, gardens, resorts and farms, plus the lookouts.

We photographed Heidi and Russell’s wedding at Yester Grange in Wentworth Falls, where the homestead lawn stops at the escarpment above the Jamison Valley, and took the big ledge frame at Lincoln’s Rock a short drive away. Our other mountain work includes photography at Dryridge Estate and Hartley House, and films at Collits Inn, the 1823 inn at Hartley Vale.

Photographing weddings in the Blue Mountains

Escarpment light changes by the minute: mist can swallow the valley and hand it back twice in one session, so we build slack into the timeline and shoot every version. The big views can swallow people too, so the portraits work best close in with the valley left to itself. Lincoln’s Rock is quiet early and late. Autumn colour runs March to May, with the Mount Wilson gardens the showpiece, and the evenings are cold even in summer. The gallery above is from Wentworth Falls.
