Pale sand, the pier and palms, and a sunset that faces straight down Port Phillip Bay
St Kilda Beach is the city’s beach: a long curve of sand on Port Phillip Bay south of the CBD, with St Kilda Pier at one end, the marina and Elwood at the other, and Catani Gardens, the Palais and Luna Park across the road. It is public foreshore rather than a venue you book, which is exactly why it is useful. Most couples we bring here are marrying somewhere within a few streets and use the beach for portraits in between.
The beach faces west, so a wedding timed for late afternoon gets soft side-light on the sand and then a full sunset over the water. Veri photographed Georgia and Michael here after their ceremony at Prince Deck, walking from Catani Gardens onto the sand as the light warmed beside the bay. The gallery below shows how the beach, the gardens and the hotel rooftop sit together in one afternoon.
The pier and the palm-lined promenade give you three distinct frames within two hundred metres: sand and water, the timber pier with the city behind, and the gardens under the palms. Summer weekends are busy, so we work the quieter stretch south of the pier or go early evening when day-trippers have thinned out. Shoes come off for the sand; keep a towel in the car. On grey days the bay goes silver and the beach photographs cleanly without a sunset at all.
