Sunlight came through the room at Prince Deck in narrow stripes, catching the lace of Georgia’s gown and the edge of her veil. Michael was getting ready at home; we met them both on the rooftop in St Kilda. Georgia walked down the timber aisle smiling, while guests turned towards her and shaded their eyes from the sun. After the ceremony, we took the wedding party through Catani Gardens, then headed to St Kilda Beach as the light dropped over Port Phillip Bay. Back at Prince Deck, the speeches had Georgia and Michael laughing across the flower-lined table. Then everyone moved outside for the dance beneath the festoon lights.

Preparation: Georgia at Prince Deck; Michael at home. Ceremony and reception: Prince Deck at The Prince Hotel, St Kilda, with speeches indoors and dancing on the deck. Portraits: Catani Gardens and the adjoining St Kilda Beach shoreline.
On Prince Deck, we kept an eye on the guests as well as Georgia and Michael. A bridesmaid wiped her eye beside the arbour; later, Georgia and Michael kissed under the white flowers, and petals flew when everyone crowded in for a group photo. At Catani Gardens, the wedding party crossed the lawn together. We slowed down beneath the trees as the sun came low, and Georgia’s veil swept across the path when she turned to kiss Michael. We reached the rocky edge of St Kilda Beach in time to photograph them against the last warm light over the bay. Michael dipped Georgia for a kiss, with the water and moored boats behind them. Indoors at The Prince, we caught their laughter during the speeches; outside, their first dance brought the guests around the rooftop floor.
A Prince Deck wedding gives us a few distinct kinds of light in one afternoon. We used the striped window light while Georgia was getting ready, worked with the bright sun on the rooftop, then took her and Michael into the softer light beneath Catani Gardens’ trees. St Kilda Beach was close enough for sunset portraits by the rocks before we returned to the indoor reception. After dark, the deck felt different again under the festoon lights. We’d leave a little room in the timeline for those garden and beach stops; they give the portraits space to breathe without pulling the couple away from the party for long.
