Mornington sits on the Port Phillip side of the peninsula, about an hour from Melbourne. Its beaches run either side of the pier and marina: Mothers Beach is the sheltered, north-facing cove beside Main Street, with rows of painted beach boxes, and Mills Beach is a kilometre north with more boxes, a stone sea wall and a grassy reserve. The peninsula has more than 1,300 of these boxes. The shire issues permits for foreshore ceremonies, with a limit of about twenty chairs and no marquees.
