Dandenong Ranges Wedding Photography

Mountain ash, tree ferns and flat soft light at any hour of the day

The Dandenong Ranges rise about 35 km east of Melbourne, an hour’s drive from the CBD, with Mount Dandenong topping out at 633 metres. The hills are cool and wet, with 1,000 to 1,500 mm of rain a year and the odd snowfall above 500 metres. Tall mountain ash and ferny gullies cover most of it, and the villages of Olinda, Sassafras, Kallista, Belgrave, Emerald and Cockatoo hold the wedding venues: gardens such as Alfred Nicholas and Cloudehill, chalets, chapels and lodges under the trees.

We have photographed weddings at Avalon Castle in Cockatoo more than once, and filmed there as well, and have photographed and filmed at Chateau Wyuna on the Mount Dandenong side of the ranges. The tall-tree light suits the way we work: no hunting for shade, and colour that stays true from the morning through to the reception.

Photographing weddings in the Dandenong Ranges

The canopy works like a giant softbox, so a midday ceremony in the hills is far kinder than the same hour in a vineyard. Fog is common and photographs well; so does drizzle under the ferns, if the couple is game. Garden venues turn hardest in autumn, when the exotics colour up against the gums. Bring a wrap: the hills run cooler than the suburbs, and evenings are cold most of the year. Puffing Billy runs from Belgrave through Emerald and Cockatoo if a steam train belongs in the day.
