Gardens House is the two-storey Victorian residence built in 1854 for the Director of the Royal Botanic Gardens, off Birdwood Avenue in South Yarra. William Guilfoyle, the Gardens’ second director, lived here and set the planting style that still surrounds it. The house keeps a private garden and lawn within the larger Gardens, a second-floor balcony over the lawn, entertaining rooms that open into one another, and the Garden Marquee for dinner and dancing. The nearest gates are Oak Lawn Gate and Observatory Gate.
We photographed Frances and Tim, who were married at Gardens House with their reception at The Terrace, also inside the Royal Botanic Gardens. The Gardens hand you a new backdrop every fifty metres: we drifted from the oak lawn to the lake edge as the light lengthened, and the city skyline appeared once, over Frances’s shoulder, right when we wanted it. We have also filmed two weddings at the house.
For Annabel and Sam it was the reception venue; the day also took in Carlton Gardens in Carlton and Fitzroy Gardens in East Melbourne.
