Palladium at Crown · Southbank, Melbourne, VIC
Ballroom Wedding · Church & Cathedral Wedding · Garden Wedding · Region: VIC - Melbourne CBD · City: Melbourne · Venues: Carlton Gardens · Crown Towers Melbourne · Palladium at Crown · St Aphrem Syrian Orthodox Church
Danielle and Michael got ready at their private homes before we joined them at St Aphrem Syrian Orthodox Church in Preston. We photographed the quiet expressions beneath Danielle’s gold wedding crown, then followed them out into the daylight. Carlton Gardens gave us shade and room for the wedding party to move together; the Crown Towers rooftop opened the view towards Melbourne’s CBD. By the time the zaffe drummers welcomed them into Palladium at Crown in Southbank, the pace had changed completely. Swords were raised, drums were going and the ballroom was ready to dance.

Ceremony: St Aphrem Syrian Orthodox Church, Preston. Portraits: Carlton Gardens and the Crown Towers Melbourne rooftop. Reception: Palladium at Crown, Southbank.
We stayed close during the Syrian Orthodox ceremony at St Aphrem, catching Danielle’s smile beneath her crown and the two of them together at the front of the church. At Carlton Gardens, we let the wedding party walk through the trees before taking quieter portraits of Danielle and Michael. The Crown Towers rooftop gave us a different backdrop in daylight, with the city behind them. At Palladium at Crown, we pulled back to fit the zaffe drummers and sword dance into the frame, then moved in for their spotlit first dance. The reception kept building: guests lifted the couple onto their shoulders, and Michael went flying above the crowd.
This Melbourne CBD ballroom wedding gave us a real change of light between stops. We photographed the wedding party beneath the trees at Carlton Gardens, then made daylight portraits on the Crown Towers rooftop before the reception at Palladium at Crown in Southbank. Inside the ballroom, we used wide frames for the chandeliers and the rush of the zaffe entrance, then came close for Danielle and Michael’s first dance and the guests around them. As the room grew darker, the moving lights gave us those streaks around the dancers. We’d plan the portrait stops and ballroom entrance as separate parts of the timeline, so each has room to breathe.
