Tree ferns, mountain ash and subtropical canopy: vows under a living green ceiling
A rainforest wedding puts the ceremony under a living canopy: tree ferns and mountain ash in the Dandenong Ranges and the Yarra Ranges, or the subtropical rainforest of the hills behind Brisbane, the Gold Coast and the Sunshine Coast. On a bright day the canopy works like a giant softbox, but it also throws patchy sun across the aisle and swallows the light early in the afternoon, so the timeline matters more than it does in an open garden. In the cool mountain forests, mist and a little drizzle are part of the charm; in Queensland, summer brings heat, humidity and the odd afternoon storm.
We have photographed 24 rainforest weddings in this collection so far, including Amanda and Patrick’s vows under the Jacaranda Tree at Bundaleer Rainforest Gardens in Brookfield, Samantha and Harrison’s hilltop day at Mont du Soleil in Kallista, fern-gully weddings at Lyrebird Falls and Poet’s Lane on Mount Dandenong, Sarah and Jye under the mountain ash at Strathvea Guesthouse above Healesville, and Tiffiny and Aaron on the Rainforest Deck at Austinvilla Estate in the Gold Coast hinterland.

Ask the venue where the sun sits over the ceremony spot at your ceremony time: under a canopy, even shade beats a single shaft of sun across the couple. Forest light fades early, especially in winter, so plan the ceremony for the early afternoon and keep portraits close to the venue straight afterwards. Paths can be damp and uneven, so pack flat shoes for the walk, a plan for wet weather and insect repellent for the guests. After dark, a single light behind the couple turns the trees into a deep green backdrop.
